Munmorah NSW, September 2024

One of Generator Property Management’s (GPM) key goals is the safe closure and de-declaration of the Colongra Creek Ash Dam. To meet NSW Dam Safety requirements and EPA obligations, GPM is undertaking a comprehensive program of technical and environmental studies.
As part of this proactive approach, GPM engaged leading environmental specialists ERM to prepare a Conceptual Site Model (CSM) for the Colongra Creek Ash Dam at the former Munmorah Power Station. This study was undertaken to build a clear understanding of site conditions and to inform long-term management and closure planning. The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has since incorporated this work into GPM’s Environmental Protection Licence, which is available on our website.
The CSM focused on four key objectives:
- Summarising the site’s history and current conditions
- Assessing potential contamination against risk‑based criteria
- Identifying possible environmental or human health linkages
- Highlighting data gaps requiring further investigation
The ultimate goal is clear: to identify the safest and most effective pathway to close the former ash dam while protecting the surrounding natural environment. This area is rich in biodiversity, supporting species such as the White-bellied Sea-Eagle (Haliaeetus leucogaste), a variety of seasonal birdlife, and unique local flora including Charmhaven apple trees (Angophora inopina – endemic to the Central Coast) and native orchids.
