Munmorah

Overview

Since 2016, GPM has owned the former Munmorah Power Station site on the NSW Central Coast. From 2016 to 2018, GPM managed the safe demolition of the power station and now oversees its ongoing remediation and rehabilitation.

The site covers approximately 720 hectares and is situated between Doyalson and Budgewoi in an area generally known as Colongra, which connects Lake Munmorah and Budgewoi Lake. It includes former Snowy Hydro land, previously used as a firefighting training area during power station operation days, and identified as a source of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). Both this land and the former power station site were declared significantly contaminated under the Contaminated Land Management Act in May 2024. GPM is responsible for remediating areas of PFAS contamination and managing the site for safe future use.

There are a range of businesses and activities on the site, including:

  • The Waratah Super Battery Project – this is one of the world’s largest battery energy storage systems and a Priority Transmission Infrastructure Project. It is designed to stabilise the grid by absorbing power surges from events such as lightning strikes and will provide up to 850 MW/ 1,680 MWh of capacity, with at least 700 MW of active capacity and 1,400 MWh of usable storage.

  • The Colongra Sporting Complex site – A 2 ha site on Scenic Drive, Colongra, now owned by Central Coast Council and dedicated to community sporting and recreation facilities.

  • Koala Park – Managed by Central Coast Council, it provides a variety of recreational facilities for the community. Visitors can enjoy walking tracks, picnic and BBQ areas, spacious grassed zones for outdoor activities, seating with tables, and toilet amenities.

  • Ausgrid Substation and Transgrid Switchyard – Key energy infrastructure supporting regional electricity networks.

  • Snowy Hydro gas-fired power plant – An operational facility providing backup energy generation.

  • Jemena gas distribution network – Infrastructure supporting regional gas supply.

  • Axicom Telecommunications Tower – Providing essential communication services.

  • Mining leases – Legacy titles managed in accordance with regulatory requirements.
